MATCHDAY FAYRE I thought I’d try a new feature for the website celebrating some of the burgers, hot dogs, bratwurst or whatever I find on sale on a matchday during my non- league adventure this season. I’ve already pencilled in some grounds where people have, following seeing my comments on burgers I’ve tried, recommended I visit so now you’ll be able to keep a track of the delights or otherwise I encounter on my journey around the south of England in 23/24!
Woodley United - The Rivermoor Ground 19th August 2023 Price: £5 A decent thick and tasty burger with cheese served in a fresh bun. Woodley also groundshare with Reading City so this is the home of the Footy Scran sensation, the Chinese box for £10. Rating:
Whitstable Town - The Belmont Stadium 16th September 2023 Price: £4.50 My Twitter followers will probably remember Whitstable coming second in my top five burgers last season and their burger causing a stir on social media. This one didn’t disappoint, a delicious double cheeseburger with a high meat content and cheese melted to perfection. Rating:
Camberley Town - Krooner Park 30th September 2023 Price: £6.50 This 6oz burger with cheese, fried onions and salad served in a brioche bun went viral after Footy Scran retweeted my picture on Twitter with 65k views so far! This is a great burger, perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. I spoke to several people and all loved it, come to think of it everyone I spoke to enjoyed the food (prepared by Nellys) on sale. Heard good things about the chicken burger (£5.50), chips & cheesy chips (£3.50 & £4.50 respectively), hot dog (£4) and their speciality, fresh donuts. You won’t go hungry at Camberley! Rating:
Maidenhead United - York Road 1st October 2023 Price: £5 I’ve been to York Road several times now following Maidenhead’s Women’s Team, and a visit to their tea hut for a Magpie burger is always my first port of call. A freshly cooked quarter pound burger with two rashers of bacon and fried onions hits the spot every time. Rating:
Tilbury - Chadfields 7th October 2023 Price: £8 The Gaffer Burger. 6oz burger with cheese, bacon rasher, chicken breast fillet, more cheese, fried onions and salad served in a fresh bun. Just wow! Love this burger, perfectly cooked, delicious and a bit of a monster! This is only part of the menu available, all burgers 6oz, plain burger, cheese burger served with American cheese, The Docker served with bacon & cheese, Street Wise served with pulled pork and onion rings and The Gaffer (on request). Also available hot dogs, chicken burgers and veggie burgers. All brought to you by the lovely ladies from Eat Street Catering. Absolute quality! Rating:
Badshot Lea - Westfield Lane 14th October 2023 Price: £8 The Moxy. Two meaty burgers with cheese, a thick bacon rasher, sausage and more cheese served in a fresh cheese bun. This should come with a fried egg on top but they were out of eggs so I had an extra rasher of bacon. Definitely a winner. Perfectly cooked, deliciously moist and not one for the faint hearted! They also do three other award winning burgers, the Baggie Burger which I had last season, the Beano (which I’ll try on my next visit) and a Veggie Burger. All top quality with The Moxy being another 5 star burger! Rating:
Fisher - St Paul’s Sports Ground 18th November 2023 Price: £7 The “Sharpie” is a choice of burgers, you can mix and match the three from a choice of beef, chicken or veggie burgers. I had two beef and a veggie burger to change it up a bit. Two lovely beef quarterpounders, a vegetable burger which was potato, carrots & sweetcorn in breadcrumbs, cheese in between, fried onions, three onion rings all served in/with a brioche bun. Well worth having a go whichever filling you decide on! Rating:
